Our first guest speaker of the year was our very own Geraldine Gray, who is a lecturer in ITB in the Department of Informatics.

This lecture was about the different types of learning styles and ways people learn differently. We would learn how people take in information and what type of learners we are ourselves. This was relevant to Digital Media students as it is important when designing something, for example a website it is important to be aware of how people recieve information differently. Geraldine explained how a recently publication in the UK compaired 60 different ways of catorgorising how people learn. The following are examples we were given:

  • 1.Learning Channels: How we take in information
  • 2.Cognitive Strengths: How we commit information to memory
  • 3.Manner or Style of Learning: How people process information to understand it
  • 4.Personality Type Influences: How you personality effects the way you learn
  • 5.Types of Learning Behaviour: Different types of intelligence
Learning Channels are divided up into 3 ways we gather information these are Auditory, Visual and Kinaestethic. There are also traits which come with the different type of channels. People that are Auditory learners will generally learn best by hearing information, therefore information is gathered more accurately when it conveyed orally. This type of learner is good at remembering names and working with words and language, while they may have difficulty working under time restraints and strangely enough may find it difficult to read silently for prolonged sessions of time. Visual Learners learn best from seeing information, for example if something is written down. Common traits would be the fact they can put together an outfit well also reading and spelling well. They may have problems working in an enviroment with noise. Kinaestetic Learners learn best while touching or moving. Common traits include being good at sports and physical activities. While having trouble staying still and with handwriting.
We did a quick multichoice questionaire to learn which catogory we fell under.
