Our third guest speaker was freelance video editor Ian Cudmore, this was a lecture I throughly enjoyed as video editing is something I’d be very interested in persuing after graduating, with great success, of course in ITB. Ian explained how he has touched on every aspect of digital media such as flash right through to film editing. Although working for yourself freelanced seems like a good idea, Ian spoke of both the positives and negitives of it.

After college Ian had a lucky break, having made a fan video for Scottish musician James Yorkston he sent him it through the social networking site myspace. James was so impressed by this he asked Ian to make him an Electronic Press Kit. Ian went to Scotland filmed interviews and other live footage of the artist. He edited this down and sent it off to James Yorkston’s record label. I found this very impressive. Especially finding work like this through the myspace website. From this, Ian has worked for other musicians such as the talented Lisa Hannigan.

Other work Ian has done is with Maeve Higgins, a comedian on RTE. He showed us a video of hers with very impressive stop motion which still I remember vividly. Ian is currently working on a short comedy for the RTE Storyland Competition, he showed us a sneak preview of an episode which was hilarious and of very high standard. After last year’s competition I have become a fan as I was following a show named “Hardy Bucks,” so Ian gets the thumbs up from me. I have been following his show since which is called “We Own the Street.”

Overall, I was extremely impressed by Ian’s work and his attitude. He talked through many areas I’d be interested in working in myself which I found very helpful and I hope next years students get to meet Ian.

Below is a video which he created.
