Our 4th guest speaker was artist Emma Wade (http://www.emmawade.com/index.html). Emma graduated  from the Fine Art Department of the National College of Art and Design, right here in Dublin. Emma had the opportunity to go to New York on an internship in the Guggenheim museum. She explained how everybody should do an internship if the chance arises, therefore I’m crossing my fingers right now. To learn in a different country would be an excellent excperience and would look very well on a CV.

After her time in New York, Emma was offered a residency in Limerick City Gallery, where she would work with various different artists in the gallery which became their own studio for a time, giving them the freedom to do as they please… sounds like fun.  Emma went on to show is some work she had completed over the past including her piece for her masters. One example was the project “HUGS”. This is a suit Emma helped create which gives the feeling of somebody hugging you, inspired by the Free Hugs movent. Unfortunately I didn’t find this very impressive, but I appreciate her creativity. Here is a picture of her hugging suit.

The next piece, again I wasn’t keen on was called “Rexotrek” which intended to show that animals, or dogs in this case have the ability to be happy as scientists have not proven this yet. To do so, Emma attached video and audio equipment to her parent’s dog in order to get the animal’s point of view. She edited down clips of the dog running on the beach and through parks etc. It was not very effective as I could not make out the clip. This piece was submitted for her masters in NCAD. Here is one example

She displayed this project in a gallery where people would have to crawl into the piece to interact with it, like a dog of course! Overall it was interesting to see the different forms of art people create, unfortunately to be brutally honest. I was not impressed by her work.
